2004 Stonehedge Petite Sirah 90 points

Stonehedge 2004 Petite Sirah (Mendocino); $19

Inky black in color with a refined nose of white pepper and blackberries. This bold effort at Petite Sirah offers a silky mouth feel with black cherries, dark chocolate and anise. This is a big wine for such a small grape, that's completely dry, with a fruity intensity that lasts through the finish. Drink now thru 2012

2005 Massena The Howling Dog 95 points

Petite Sirah, Barossa Valley, $32

Get this fabulous wine while you can, it can be cellard up till 2018. Petite Sirah is one of my favorite wines and this is one of the best I've ever had. Its inky/blue/purple hue is accompanied by scents of blueberry liqueur, crushed rocks, and acacia flowers. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with surprisingly supple, but extravagant levels of tannin, it is not yet ready for prime time drinking. Purchasers should forget it over 4-5 years, then watch it unfold over the next two decades.

It got a little chili in St. Pete last night and that's perfect for a Petite Sirah. This wine shows massive blackcherry, blackberry, plum, cocoa, tobacco, balsamic, soy, coffee beans and Asian spice flavors. Drink now thru 2012, and get this best buy by the case.

2005 JC Cellars The Imposter 90 points

Red Blend, California, $32

I love red blends, zinfandel, petite sirah, syrah, mourvedre, viognier makes for a great bottle of wine. Viognier elevates the usual cherry-berry and spice flavors, giving it both earthier, deeper notes as well as brighter citrus fruits. Decant before serving.

2005 Girard Petite Sirah 93 points

Petite Sirah, Napa Valley, $28

This has a certain rustic charm with a classic structure and a little edge. Blueberries, black currants, loganberries, plums, cherries, dark unsweetened chocolate, leather, coffee, violets—they all come together in this dry, fresh young wine. Will easily hold for a decade or two, gradually getting softer and sweeter, buy this by the case.

Retro Cellars 04' Petite Sirah 92 points

Petite Sirah Muscatine Vineyard Old Vine

Tannin alert! This is old-fashionedly rustic, a wine for the cellar. Give it 6 to 8 years to begin to unlock the blackberries; it could live longer that that. Cellar Selection.
